The progress of mankind is depicted through art since prehistoric times. In the very early periods, the only living was plucking and living off of the trees. Then man learnt to catch rats, and the use of the stone weapons. The Bronze Age art shows use of bows, arrows and other tools as well as taming of the animal world. In the later cave paintings, we find complex art, focus on family, as well as fierce warfare among the tribes. Mohenjo-daro Civilization belongs to the 2nd millennium BC; Ajanta and Ellora in central India belong to the 5th Century AD; and Chandela temples of Khajuraho, also in central India, were built in the 10th Century AD. People all over the world have expressed their feelings through Art, Poetry, Sculpture, etc. The 15th century artists of the Renaissance period created highly life-like Christian works of art. By the 17th century, after the Christian church split into Roman Catholic and Protestant factions, the former was using art to spread its teachings. To appeal to the viewer, it promoted a style of art that was theatrical and emotional. This Baroque Art encouraged painters to use light and shade for dramatic contrasts, and sculptors to show figures in dynamic poses. Romanticism Art of the late 18th/early 19th century explored emotions and showed nature in its untamed state. 19th century Realism / Naturalism showed real life, including its unpleasant side, such as, poverty. Impressionism of late 19th century conveyed impressions of what the eye sees, rather than what the mind knows is there. Symbolism of the late 19th century links real and the spiritual worlds. In early 20th century Art, the emotions of the artist are powerfully expressed. In Abstract Art, shapes, lines, etc., are more important than the objects they represent. Pop Art of 1950s comprises comics and advertising. In Environmental Art, landscape is decorated; stones, etc., may be used. Brit Art began in 1988 and is the modern art started by a group of British artists. Visual medium, by far, makes the most impact on mind. In this age of Digital Technology, art-related computer software, 2D and 3D animation, etc., the scope for creations is immense. Further, the hi-tech cameras and lenses, with the help of computers, make Image Manipulation and Photocomposition very easy. Even the poems/poetry (Epic/Dramatic/Lyric) can be reinforced with videos now a day. As far as Sikh Art is concerned, the works of art, from the sixteenth through the nineteenth century, include paintings, drawings, textiles, and metalwork. Let Sikh Art flourish in this century, like never before. We have the most unique historical events and ideological viewpoints, through which we can convey/express ourselves to the world.
